Here are some key points to keep in mind when you file an extension by April 18th:
If you are approved for an extension, you'll have an extra six months to file your taxes. This means your new deadline will be October 15th. That extension only applies to filing your paperwork - you will still need to pay any taxes owed by the original deadline to avoid penalties and interest charges.
Filing an extension is a good idea if you are missing important documents, need more time to organize your finances or just want to avoid making mistakes in a rush.
The IRS urges grandparents, foster parents, or people caring for siblings or other relatives to check their eligibility to receive the 2021 Child Tax Credit. It's important for people who might qualify for this credit to review the eligibility rules to make sure they still qualify.
- Taxpayers can use the Interactive Tax Assistant to check eligibility.
- Taxpayers who haven't qualified in the past should also check because they may now be able to claim the credit. To receive it, eligible individuals must file a 2021 federal tax return.
